And how can you make sure you\u2019re properly covered when you start living or working here?<\/p>\n<p>In this blog, we\u2019ll walk you through the key things you need to know about Spanish healthcare as an expat.<\/p>\n<h3>The basics: how the Spanish healthcare system works<\/h3>\n<p>Spain has a\u00a0<strong>public healthcare system<\/strong>, known as the\u00a0<em>Sistema Nacional de Salud<\/em>\u00a0(SNS). It\u2019s funded through taxation and provides residents with access to free or heavily subsidised healthcare.<\/p>\n<p>You\u2019re entitled to public healthcare if you:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Work in Spain and pay social security contributions<\/li>\n<li>Receive a Spanish pension or unemployment benefit<\/li>\n<li>Are registered as a resident and meet specific conditions<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In addition to the public system, Spain also has a strong\u00a0<strong>private healthcare sector<\/strong>, which is accessed via private health insurance. Without it, you can\u2019t register for most services.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Empadronamiento<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 registration with your local town hall, proving your place of residence.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Social security number (n\u00famero de afiliaci\u00f3n)<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 required to access public healthcare. Once you\u2019re registered, you\u2019ll receive your\u00a0<em>tarjeta sanitaria<\/em>, the health card that allows you to visit public clinics and hospitals.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>If you\u2019re not working in Spain yet, private insurance is often the best solution. The good news: private policies are usually more affordable than in many other countries. Premiums typically start from around \u20ac40 to \u20ac70 per month, depending on age and coverage.<\/p>\n<h3>What about healthcare allowance or excess?<\/h3>\n<p>Two common questions we hear from Dutch and Belgian expats:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Healthcare allowance?<\/strong>\u00a0No. Spain does not offer a health insurance subsidy like the Netherlands does.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Excess?<\/strong>\u00a0There\u2019s no mandatory excess in the public system. In the private system, however, co-payments may apply depending on your plan (e.g. \u20ac10\u2013\u20ac20 per appointment).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Healthcare in Valencia: what can you expect?<\/h3>\n<p>Valencia offers excellent healthcare, with both large public hospitals and well-equipped private clinics. Notable examples include\u00a0<strong>Hospital La Fe<\/strong>\u00a0(public) and\u00a0<strong>IMED Valencia<\/strong>\u00a0or\u00a0<strong>Hospital Quir\u00f3nsalud<\/strong>\u00a0(private).<\/p>\n<p>There\u2019s also an increasing number of English-speaking doctors and specialists familiar with the needs of international patients.
